The Internet grew out of work done at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the 1960s. The first director of DARPA, J.C.R. Licklider, wrote of a Galactic Network in which global interconnections would allow everyone to access data and programs quickly from any place on the network.
